Webinar Q&A

Q: Is the Storyline feature new?

A: Smartcat supports XLIFF files exported from Storyline and Rise (and other tools) and we had this in the product for quite a while. We do pay special attention to ensure we're handling Storyline files in the best way possible when it comes to segmentation/formatting.

Q: Is there a feature that will translate the audio from a video embedded in training?

A: Smartcat can translate the video and do the transcription — check out the webinar recording, we have this in the demo!

Q: Does Smartcat only translate languages or does it translate coding languages as well? I.E. C# or Java?

A: Smartcat is an all-in-one platform — we support developer file formats such as Java .properties files, RESX files, XML, JSON, etc. We can do a personal demo of this functionality — please book a demo with us.

Q: Can we see the linguist's info before the file is translated?

A: Yes you have full control over which linguists you work with. In the webinar recording, Jean-Luc is demoing the fully-automated option but you can manually select a translator yourself. You can also invite your linguists to do the editing instead of selecting from the Smartcat marketplace.

Q: For video, does it translate the audio itself? Or does it just add the translated transcript

A: The ability to export video with dubbed audio is in the works, and we cover this in the webinar recording!

Q: Is it possible to edit timestamps in the videos before export?

A: That's something we're working on, so follow our news in early 2024.

Q: If you change the video subtitles transcripted from the original language, does Smartcat update the translation?

A: Sure! After transcription is done, you can make changes to the source. Then you can re-run automatic translation for the changed segment right in the editor through an appropriate AI Action.

Q: What formats does Smartcat support for the closed captioning files?

A: We support SRT and VTT files (if you upload them directly), and also auto-convert all popular video file formats to give you back SRT and VTT.

Q: How would you train with the system? Would it be online or in person? What feedback have you had? How much money can you save?

A: It all takes place online. The system itself does a lot of the training. The 95% accuracy that you can get with AI translation right out of the box is based on the AI taking edits that have been made similar to yours in the past and improving the quality of the translations. Фтв most of the savings will come from reduced amount of edits. Stay tuned for the case studies about these results!

Q: Is it true that you need your glossaries uploaded before a project is started? Or, can you add a glossary after an AI translation?

A: You can upload a glossary after an AI translation. You’ll just need to rerun the translation in that case.

Q: I already have a TM and a glossary in Smartcat. Do I have to go through this generative AI setup as well?

A: We provide a default generative AI Engine for you. If you don’t have it available in your account, please reach out to us, we’ll configure your account so that it’s available to you. If you want to customize, to add some specific instructions, you can create your translation engines.

Q: How many preferences can I set up/save?

A: There is almost no limit, probably several thousands of translation engines.

Q: How do you protect your clients' data?  IE. they have sensitive data that isn't necessarily public information.

A: First, all of the data. Well, we don't send for translation or for training more data than we need to. And the data is anonymized and pretty much shuffled like from the other system perspective. Everything that comes from Smartcat regardless of how many clients we have, comes from from Smartcat itself, from the perspective of the translation providers. So with that and given our protection policies and protection policies enforced by providers, such as generative AI, DeepL, and other translation providers, we offer the best in class data protection. It's up to you whether you want to use certain features and providers based on your company policies, but we do as best as we can to ensure that your data is safe from a general content perspective. Every client's content is containerized. Nobody can access anything else. And even within that we at Smartcat, can't access your content if you use freelancers. The freelancers can only access the individual translated version of the content that you give them access to. So it's highly secure. We're SOC2 compliant. We've got multiple data centers around the world to make sure that we're compliant with all regional requirements for data, sovereignty, and security.

Q: About the dubbing: Can we also just use template voices so we don't overuse a speaker's voice for other languages?

A: Yes. You will be able to use pre-made voices.

Q: Can we provide an audio file to Smatcat and get it back in another language?

A: Right now we're testing the technology. Stay tuned for the news!
